Our story…

Winter Yarn started in 2011 when I got Glandular Fever and got super bored lying in bed feeling sorry for myself. So I decided to do something about it. I lived next door to my Nanny and Pa at the time and begged my Nanny to teach me how to knit. So I started making scarves for homeless people around the Sydney CBD near where I went to university.

I took it to the next step by trying to sell some scarves at a local second hand market. Selling just a couple of them gave me the motivation I needed to create a tiny ‘business’. From there I started to expand my range: blankets, beanies, baby clothes, bunting, cushions, anything creative I could work on with the help and support of my Nanny, Grandma and of course my super creative mother.

I tried every little market I could find around the Sutherland Shire area and had mild success in most cases. But it wasn’t ‘til 2018, after moving to Canberra and experimenting with a bunch of other creative things that I found a way to combine my love of Pokémon with my love of crafting and art.
I first starting selling my Pokémon Terrariums at The Canberra Show in 2018 with only 14 terrariums mixed in with all my other products. The response was amazing! I realised that this was the way forward for Winter Yarn.

Not only do I love making the terrariums, but they were bringing so much joy to others, and that was so important to me! I started doing bigger markets in Canberra and also formed a relationship with Revolution CD in Woden, were they still stock my terrariums today! I then continued down the nerdy route and started making Dice Jewellery and Pokémon Rhinestone and Heat Bead Artworks.

I started exhibiting at conventions such as Gamma.Con and SMASH and I have never felt such support and love from the nerdy community!

It has been a crazy ride, and it has taken a lot of perseverance; but with the love and support of my family, my husband, my friends and the community, I can confidently say that the best is yet to come!
